Why is Source Water Protection Important?

There is a profound financial impact on a community when its water supply becomes contaminated.

Without proper planning, costly alternatives such as installing treatment facilities, locating new water sources, or remediating contamination may be necessary to provide safe drinking water. Such options may not be possible in many Nevada communities.

A safe source of drinking water is essential to health and safety, and to sustaining the local economy of Nevada’s rural communities. And it’s far cheaper to address a potential problem before it occurs, than it is to try and fix it afterwards. In the case of a contaminated groundwater supply, it may not even be possible to “fix” a problem. A contaminated drinking water supply could signal the demise of an entire rural community!
Another important aspect to protecting drinking water supplies is understanding current and future water needs. As residents of the driest state in the nation, most Nevadans--especially those in rural communities--are conscious of the limited water resources available. In the face of increasing growth and increasing water demands from metropolitan areas, rural communities need to be proactive both in protecting their drinking water supplies and planning for future needs. Making wise decisions about the use of water resources can help ensure that a sufficient supply of quality water is available for decades to come. The voluntary Source Water Protection Planning program is designed to help accomplish this.
